R.O.C. comments by Reyna K.

The articles Role Plays, Show and Don't Tell and Testing, Tracking and Toeing the line are pretty interesting. I never thought of role playing in my art classroom. These articles make me wonder how I can incorporate interesting roles into my classroom to get a good learning experience. As art goes I know there is performance art, but I am questioning how can I combine social justice role play while doing art at the same time. I think this is a good spark in thinking of the possibilities you can do in art. I think students would progress or benefit at making notions for their art work.

  1. Reyna,

I was thinking the same thing, but you can have your students role play artists. There are many artists who make art about social justice issues. Kara Walker, Keith Haring, The Bee Hive Collective, Catherine Opie, I could keep going. The Multi-Cultural Education book is a great place to start. You could have students become the artists and create monologues about why and how they make their art. They can then create a work that is reminiscent of the artist. In fact that would be a good art unit lesson. Great point.

  2. Oh, of course Faith Ringgold. Sorry just thought of her. It would be so exciting to do this.
