Title of Lesson: Name your Twisted Graffiti


National Standards:
N/A

Texas Essential Knowledge Skills (TEKS): §117.17. Art, Grade 5
Creative expression/performance. The student expresses ideas through original artworks, using a variety of media with appropriate skill.

Objectives:
1.Students will learn how to design their own name in colored chalk in a graffiti style.
2.Students will use the methods of blending colors and to create intensity into their letters. The classroom will observe mural projects that are made in different communities.

Social/Historic Context for Lesson: This lesson shows that graffiti is not a negative reference; this art form can be beautiful and expressive. Students will observe different styles of graffiti and apply something they perceived from the lesson into their own work.

Timeline for Lesson: a week and a half




Activity/Procedure:
1. I will Present the project, the artistic terms, and show a couple of examples of different graffiti that is appropriate for our use. The class will look at murals in local communities and internationally. They will go home with a handout of what they will be learning and they will have another paper with Vocabulary words to look over.

2. Students will get their sketchbooks out and practice designing their names and keep that sketch as a guide for their real paperboard.


3.  Students are presented with a black poster board (22X28). Students will draw out their designed names with pencil then they will pick 5 colors of chalk to start coloring in their letters.

4. Students will have a whole week and three days to finish up project and the following day the students will turn in the project to be graded. I will spray their work with a clear coating to keep the chalk drawing from smearing.


Assessments (objective or subjective):
1. Did Students put an effort to create a design of their names in their own way?


2. Did the student fill enough space to get their designs message through?

Future Considerations/Notes:  Turn this project into a partial field trip?
