Brittany Barlag Making Art Together Lessons 10-18 Commentary

Lesson 14: Redesigning the Classroom
I really liked this lesson because I enjoyed the idea that the students decide the environment that they work in.  I know that when I do my work I'm very specific about where things are placed or what's going on around me.  I think that your surrounding space really plays a major role in productivity and creativity and letting the students control that (within reason) is awesome.  I think it also allows the students to think more critically and creatively and it has them working together to benefit the whole.  It's a great lesson that gives the students a place to start but allows for them to think of the details themselves.

Lesson 18: Performance Art and Multimedia Presentation
I thought this lesson was interesting because I feel like it allows the students creativity and comfortability.  You use scenes that are familiar to them in which activities take place that they most likely participate in. It incorporates improvisation and thinking on-the-fly.  It's also something that you could turn into a production and perform in front of the school.  There are so many options with an assignment like this that I feel like everyone could join in and enact something that they like or that describes them.  Plus, I don't feel like many art classes explore areas like performance art.  I could be wrong, but I know that the art classes in my district didn't.

I also liked the totem pole assignment and the wall hanging one because they provide an opportunity to bring the kids' lives into the assignment and I'm always a fan of that.
